VILLAGE OF NEWARK LOCAL WATERFRONT REVITALIZATION PLANNING PROCESS UNDERWAY AND SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT
Building from earlier public engagement, the Village is seeking continued input on the community’s vision, goals, and proposed projects that will revitalize and protect the Erie Canal waterfront.

In 2025, the Village of Newark commenced the development of a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) to identify recreational, social, and economic development opportunities associated with the Erie Canal and waterfront areas in the Village. The planning effort is being facilitated by a Waterfront Advisory Committee (WAC) consisting of local stakeholders including residents, business owners, County tourism representatives, regional recreational stakeholders, and Village officials.
Building on earlier rounds of public engagement, the WAC is currently in the process of identifying proposed projects to revitalize the waterfront, protect the sensitive environment, and establish a long-term management and funding strategy. To ensure these elements are in line with the desires of the community, the WAC will be seeking feedback from anyone with an interest in the Village and waterfront at a public workshop to be held at the Fire Department Meeting Hall, 100 East Miller Street, Floor 2 on Wednesday, May 6th. At this workshop, a brief presentation will occur at 5:15 pm, but all are welcome at any time from 5 pm to 7 pm.

"The LWRP will assist the Village in creating real economic and recreational opportunities while providing for improvements that will make the Village a more affordable and environmentally resilient place.”
The Village of Newark’s planning process began in January 2025 and is expected to take approximately five years to complete. Once the LWRP implementation components are identified, the document can be adopted and the projects and opportunities in the plan become eligible and competitive for a range of state funding, including implementation dollars through the Department of State’s LWRP implementation grant. Expanded access to the water, flood mitigation, water quality improvements, and recreational enhancements are all eligible expenses for future project funding.
