- The Village of Newark wastewater system covers a service area of 5.4 square miles.
- Comprised of storm water sewers, separate sanitary sewers, nine pump stations, and a 3 MGD activated sludge wastewater plant.
- The wastewater plant was originally was constructed in the early 1900’s with limited treatment.
- The first major upgrade to the facility was done in the 1930’s with others completed in the mid 1950’s, 1960’s and 1980’s. The last upgrade was completed in 2024.
- The plant currently discharges to the Erie Canal and is monitored daily by the plant staff and the results are reported monthly to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
- The Village Board has committed to continued improvements to the collection system and the treatment facility through grants and other revenues.
- The plant staff continues to operate the plant in an excellent fashion allowing the plant to pass all NYSDEC and USEPA inspections, audits and reports.
Some of the recent projects and improvements in the last few years included upgrades or replacement of 3 pump stations & the addition of a ninth one to prevent sewage flowing into the canal during high flows, a new Influent Building, additional treatment tanks, a new sludge composite building and ultraviolet disinfection. These improvements will allow the plant to meet the needs of the village residents for many years to come.
